The MEFO's and the Heidenaur's DS tires have been discussed and dissected in detail ad-nauseum on ADVrider.com.

In their DS tread pattern which is the Explorer or Super Explorer I did a photoshop comparison showing that the two tires are nearly identical. With the exception that MEFO runs the pattern forward and Heidenaur runs the pattern reverse depending on how you look at it.

Sizing and availability in the US is limited to some degree but the good news is that a few guys have done long detailed trips on rough terrain and street with excellent results.

Where the TKCs tend to be sort of 40/60 road / dirt, the MEFO DS's are more like 60/40 road / dirt +/- and reported to be much better in the wear.

Been tempted but not enough yet I guess to swap the TKCs.

Again, tons of info on ADVrider.com just do a search.

Why is it that when I press 1 for English I still can't understand the person on the other end?

Being a bachalor I should really use rubbers but I don't. Rubbers are kinda like owning a dual sport and never leaving the pavment!

OK, no one had added a smut reply yet so I had to be first

I had Mefo Explorers. I was not at all happy for the price! IMOA Kendas are a much better tire and alot cheaper!!!!!

The rear maybe got a little better milage then a Kenda 270, and hooked up all right, but the front wore all wierd, simular to a stock KLR frt tire. The front would squirme all over on rain grooving on 95 and would track even the slightest groove in hardtop!

I took the front off at half wear and gave it to TommyD for a spare. I would not buy a Mefo again!

My next set of meats for the 990 will be the Super Explorer rear and a 606 front. I've heard they do very well off road in the stuff we have around here and get great mileage out of them.
